Fabulous point! I have wholly changed my mind on that since I published this article. China’s actions in relation to Taiwan (& the South China seas more generally) this past month and their potential to begin world war 3 as a consequence, are really scary.

That said, the US is a war machine with 800 bases around the world; 400 of them centred around China, who has been made out to be the bad guy since the 1980s (Ronald Reagan made some infamous speeches on this and they have continued in media portrayals and comments by US politicians and generals since).

China has in contrast (to this provocative action) been a preacher for diplomacy and maintaining diplomatic relations for the sake of economics / trade / had been pedalling soft power through actions in places like Africa and through their Belt and Road initiative. Their recent actions though and belligerence in the face of logical international opposition, completely undermines that though.

I hold real fears (as perhaps you do, from your comment) that the world may soon go to war because of China’s less than co-operative politics right now. I can’t say I thought it would come to this, until the actions of the last month or so. I actually thought China had more sense.
